Answer the following questions on your blog:

1) Look at the first page. What is colonialism - also known as cultural imperialism?

they describe it as – the belief that native people were intellectually inferior, and that white colonisers had a moral right to subjugate the local populace as they were ‘civilising’ them:

2) Now look at the second page. What is postcolonialism?

Like postmodernism, postcolonialism refers less to a specific time period and more to a critique of a previous school of thought, it exists to question white patriarchal views with a particular reference to how they relate to race.

3) How does Paul Gilroy suggest postcolonialism influences British culture?

Gilroy further explored posycolonialism in his 1993 book The Black Atlantic, where he made the case that slavery and the slave trade produced a hybrid culture that cut across international borders. This was significant because it shifted the focus of the study of the African diaspora, which had traditionally tended to be more concerned with national identity than with the challenges specific to this hybrid culture.

4) What is 'othering'?

The phenomenon known as "othering" occurs when we label something as being foreign or unlike our social identity. If anything is "other," it is distinct from "us" and doesn't fit in with our society's norms.

5) What examples of 'othering' are provided by the article?

Nigel Farage, who won the 2016 referendum by capitalising on a sense of unhappiness in British society and targeting immigrants, is well known for standing in front of a sign depicting a lengthy queue of immigrants, most of whom are not white, with the phrase "breaking point."

6) What is 'double consciousness'?

Its a theory created by paul gilroy where he found the individual sensation of feeling as though your identity is divided into several parts, making it difficult or impossible to have one unified identity.

7) What are 'racial hierarchies'?

The notion that some races are superior to others is known as a racial hierarchy. People who support these ideals in Western society typically support white supremacy. Though attitudes towards various ethnic groups might alter with time.

8) What examples from recent media products challenge the idea of racial hierarchies?

I feel like all of the media being focused on the 'the titan' submarine which had 4 rich people who payed 250k  despite the fact that in spain there was a migrant boat which sunk and had no direction of any media or any saviours despite the fact they carried over 50 times the passengers than the submarine
