Migrain- genre

1) What example is provided of why visual iconographies are so important?

In this media source, it lists a varieties of ways that visual iconography is so important. Like how it helps introduce important factors such as the genre which helps us categorise the media source we are consuming. visual iconography can also contain codes as well as narrative theories these are also a key factor in media as different narrative types help us further understand the media product and what is happening.

2) What examples are provided of the importance of narrative in identifying genre?

I feel as though the main importance of the variation of narrative when identifying the genre of a media source is because we have created multiple genres for a reason. What I mean by this is that if we were to take narratives of an action movie which would include a violent and crime filled atmosphere, it would be something completely different from what we would expect to happen in a film labelled romance, same goes vice versa. there are also many different ways of introducing these and have specific rules each character will have to follow. For example, in a horror movie it would be out of context if halfway through the movie a character that's on the main cast were to shoot one of the other characters but it would be easily expected if we were watching an action movie including a cast of characters. This is because although these characters each have their roles (hero/villain/anti-hero) but they are each presented in different ways. an anti hero in an action film would betray their group by killing a main character however in a romantic movie the anti hero would probably do something less gruesome like ruining a wedding.

3) What is the difference between character representation in action movies and disaster movies?

In a "disaster movie it usually singles out to the fact that a terrible disaster has occurred in which it results for a group of survivors to get together in order to survive for the next few days. On the contrary, I feel as though action movies have a wide set of options on how the film could play out with character representations as the stories aren't always so similar and the characters in the genres are expected to betray or backstab a group if not, the characters can be independent or in different numbers varying from 2-hundreds. In action movies its more important to identify the roles as they can have a bigger impact on the film

4) What are the different ways films can be categorised according to Bordwell?
-
-series
-animations
-audience
-style films

5) List three ways genre is used by audiences.

series- genre can be used by the audience order to pick what they will watch next. for example if someone who doesn't like horror movies but enjoys romantic films, they will use genre to define the two and pick the one that has a romantic connotations

-they can also use genre in order to compare other films of the same genre in order to see the similarities of the same genre films

-the audience can use their knowledge on genre to predict the outcome or gain a current understanding of what is and will happen within the media source

6) List three ways genre is used by institutions or producers.

Most producers will have a loyal fanbase
which watch their films due to a specific genre, they may also use a hybrid of genres as this could attract a wider audience range. they can also cast well known actors in their product to attract fans of said actor

7) What film genre is used as an example of how genres evolve? What films and conventions are mentioned?

A film genre that has shown a clear example of how genres have evolved overtime is in the traditional gangster movie. Where Tommy gun was given a violin case as a prop which was then revealed to be a gun. This has shocked many of the gangster film enjoyers as its not something that has often happened. However after this happened, it would become iconic if it was a scene that was being repeated.

Read Media Factsheet 126 - Superheroes: A Genre Case Study and answer the following questions:

1) List five films the factsheet discusses with regards to the Superhero genre.

M Spider Man, X men, The Avengers, Guardians Of The Galaxy and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

2) What examples are provided of how the Superhero genre has reflected the changing values, ideologies and world events of the last 70 years?

In Spiderman, the first villains consisted of a villain named 'the sandman' which was a villain created out of sand as well as a substance of venom. This helped differentiate the clear change of darkness and light.

In superman, They used hints that showed similarities of ww2 which was a global crisis similar to the timeline.

In batman's movie 'Batman Forever' His villain two face is introduced into the franchise which introduces the first character with split personality. This also represents binary opposition heavily.

Task 2: Genre analysis case study

Carry out your own genre analysis using the model provided by media theorist Daniel Chandler. Choose a film or TV text and answer the following questions - brief answers/bullet point responses are fine:

James bond franchise

General
1) Why did you choose the text you are analysing?

I chose this film due to its recognition and popularity

2) In what context did you encounter it?

At first i just naturally knew the name of james bond and after the latest film dropped i started watching them

3) What influence do you think this context might have had on your interpretation of the text?
I feel as though it doesn’t heavily impact how i see the text however following the series in order gives a more purplex knowledge on what’s happening as well as show references some newcomers might not know

4) To what genre did you initially assign the text?

thriller/action

5) What is your experience of this genre?

I enjoy watching this hybrid of films as they usually contain violent scenes with a twisted sense of humour

6) What subject matter and basic themes is the text concerned with?

the subject manner of this film is a bit all over the place as so much happens in the span of this film so in the individual movies it can be about violence as well as travel however if we look ay james bond as a franchise it could shift the main focus being passing down the title of 007.

7) How typical of the genre is this text in terms of content?

this text i feel is the perfect representation of its genres. most could argue that this film franchise is the face of these genres

8) What expectations do you have about texts in this genre?

In texts in this specific genre you can expect lots of gunfights as well as a wide variety of locations with a plot regarding a hostage or blackmail.

9) Have you found any formal generic labels for this particular text (where)?

yes the guns violence and car chases are all generic labels

10) What generic labels have others given the same text?

generic labels in this sort of film type given to other texts could be romantic bonds

11) Which conventions of the genre do you recognize in the text?

The main conventions of this genre are the use of props such as guns, outfits like suits, actors being covered in blood and  suspenseful music.

12) To what extent does this text stretch the conventions of its genre?

i don’t feel as though this film exceeds the genre conventions as previously stated it is the face of its cross genre

13) Where and why does the text depart from the conventions of the genre?

maybe during romantic scenes except it’s not as if it’s completely irrelevant to the genre since love in these films help build a close bond that can be broken easily in order to provoke the protagonist

14) Which conventions seem more like those of a different genre (and which genre(s))?
i feel as though this film sticks to its genre and has no other conventions

15) What familiar motifs or images are used?

Gunfights and chases happen throughout the movies.

Mode of address
1) What sort of audience did you feel that the text was aimed at (and how typical was this of the genre)?

this genre would be aimed towards young adults who enjoy fights and action

Relationship to other texts
1) What intertextual references are there in the text you are analysing (and to what other texts)? Intertextuality is when a media product references another media text of some kind.

I feel as though this film rather influences other texts as it is one of the most original films that have been running for a long time. If i had to compare it to anything i would have to say fast and furious.
