audience theory 2

1) Social learning theory has been criticised for simplifying the causes of violence in society. Do you think the media is responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence?

I disagree, I feel as though the media can help influence or teach violence to an audience partially however they are not fully to blame as other factors such as environment also affect this.

2) How is social learning theory relevant in the digital age? Are young people now learning behaviour from social media and the internet? Give examples.

I feel as though the social learning theory is very relevant to this current digital age as the younger generation of this time is going to lead to the future control over the world. It is also very easy now to manipulate younger audiences through media

3) Research three examples of moral panic from the last 50 years. To what extent was the media responsible for these moral panics? Was the concern in society justified? How have things changed as a result of these moral panics?

-5G towers emitting cancer: Due to superstition, civilians were led to believing the newly made '5G' towers were the  cause for the rise of cancer cases

-Critical race theory: In 2021, widespread fear of the teaching of Critical Race Theory in American schools was promoted by conservative media working alongside Republican governed states.

-government planning covid-19: After the covid scenario started to prolong and the vaccines were released, the public was starting to wonder that the government had vaccines the whole time which meant they were the cause.

4) Read this introduction to an academic paper on technopanics. What examples are given of technopanics that create fear in society? If the link is blocked in school, you can access the text here.

There will be a number of instances of fear appeal arguments, with a special emphasis on cyber-security, digital privacy, and kid safety online. There will be tracking of the numerous "fear cycles" causing causes in these policy domains.

5) Do you think the internet should be regulated? Should the government try and control what we can access online?

I feel as though its close to impossible to regulate the internet due to the depths and size of it. Even trying to work on the regulation of the internet, it will always be overwritten by people who will still get their way. The only thing they do by trying to restrict the internet is delaying the inevitable.

6) Apply Gerbner's cultivation theory to new and digital media. Is the internet creating a fearful population? Are we becoming desensitised to online threats, trolling and abuse? Is heavy internet use something we should be worried about in society? Write a paragraph discussing these ideas.

The majority of our lives now revolve around the internet and media; no one really buys newspapers or magazines because they can easily access them online; and entertainment typically consists of watching shows and movies or playing video games. As a result, I think Gerbner's cultivation theory does apply to new and digital media. This Means that us as members of the internet have to rely a to a certain extent of internet knowledge which can lead to some corruption.

1) Complete the questions in the first activity box (beginning with 'Do you play violent games? Are you violent in real life?')

do play violent video games but i am not violent in real life, if i get annoyed, i take it out through the game but not outside. the only factor outside of gaming that has affected me is the type of people i play and watch play games help influence how i act as a person

2) What are the four categories for different effects theories?

 Direct Effect Theories
 Diffusion Theories
 Indirect Effect Theories
 The Pluralist Approach

3) What are the examples provided for the hypodermic needle theory - where media texts have been blamed for certain events?

A key example that is popular is how the public is led to believe that Andrew Tate is a bad person by only posting parts f things he says that can seem bad to the public if taken out of context.

4) What was the 1999 Columbine massacre? You may need to research this online in addition to the information on the factsheet.

Dylan Klebold, 17, and Eric Harris, 18, committed out the shootings. They invaded Columbine High School in Jefferson County, Colorado, on April 20, 1999, armed with semiautomatic rifles, pistols, and various explosives. They killed 12 additional kids and a teacher.

5) What are the reasons listed on the factsheet to possibly explain the Columbine High School massacre?

-the music they listened to
-the easy access they had to guns
-they games they have been playing
